Have you ever bought a skincare product because everyone seemed to love it, only to discover that your skin didn't love it at all?
The problem may simply be that the product wasn't right for your skin type.
Understanding your skin type is one of the first steps to building a skincare routine that actually works. It helps you choose products with intention instead of buying whatever is trending.
So, how do you know your skin type?
The 4 Main Skin Types
There are four main skin types: normal, dry, oily and combination.
1. Normal Skin
Normal skin generally feels balanced—not excessively oily or dry.
You may have normal skin if your skin:
Feels comfortable throughout the day
Doesn't become excessively oily
Rarely feels tight or flaky
2. Dry Skin
Dry skin produces less natural oil and may struggle to maintain its protective barrier.
You may have dry skin if your skin:
Frequently feels tight, especially after cleansing
Looks rough, dull or flaky
Often feels like it needs moisturizer
Remember: Dry skin and dehydrated skin are different. Dry skin lacks oil, while dehydrated skin lacks water. Even oily skin can become dehydrated.
3. Oily Skin
Oily skin naturally produces more sebum.
You may have oily skin if:
Most of your face becomes shiny throughout the day
Your pores appear more noticeable
You're more prone to clogged pores or breakouts
Having oily skin doesn't mean you should skip moisturizer or try to strip all the oil from your face. Oily skin still needs proper hydration.
4. Combination Skin
Combination skin has characteristics of more than one skin type.
Typically, the T-zone—forehead, nose and chin—is oily, while the cheeks are normal or dry.
If some parts of your face become shiny while others feel dry or comfortable, you may have combination skin.
What About Sensitive Skin?
You've probably heard sensitive skin described as a skin type, but sensitivity is better understood as a skin condition or characteristic rather than one of the four basic skin types.
Sensitive skin may be prone to redness, burning, stinging, itching or irritation.
And you can have sensitivity alongside any skin type.
For example:
Oily + sensitive skin
Dry + sensitive skin
Combination + sensitive skin
This is why understanding your skin involves more than simply saying, "I have sensitive skin."
You also need to understand your underlying skin type.
A Simple Way to Identify Your Skin Type at Home
Start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser and patting it dry. Don't apply any other skincare products.
Wait about 30–60 minutes, then observe your skin.
Comfortable and balanced? → Normal
Tight or dry all over? → Dry
Shiny or oily across most of your face? → Oily
Oily T-zone but normal/dry cheeks? → Combination
This isn't a medical diagnosis, but it can give you a useful starting point for understanding your skin.
Skin Type vs. Skin Condition vs. Skin Concern
Here's an easy way to remember the difference:
Skin type = How your skin generally behaves
Normal, dry, oily or combination.
Skin condition = Something affecting your skin's current state
For example, sensitivity or dehydration.
Skin concern = Something you want to improve
Acne, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, fine lines, dullness, etc.
So you could have:
Oily skin + dehydration + acne
or
Dry skin + sensitivity + hyperpigmentation.
Understanding these differences helps explain why copying someone else's skincare routine doesn't always work, even if you appear to have the same skin concern.
Why Knowing Your Skin Type Matters
Knowing your skin type helps you make better decisions about the products you buy.
Before purchasing another skincare product, ask yourself:
Why am I buying this?
Is it suitable for my skin type?
Does it address one of my actual skin concerns?
Where will it fit into my routine?
Your skincare shelf doesn't need more products.
It needs the right products.
